Changes of urban system are an inevitable result of the socio-economic development process, especially organically linked with the industrial development revolution, the scientific and technical revolution. In Vietnam, the urban system is divided into six types depending on factors such as function, population, and the proportion of workers in the industry-service sector.
Therefore, this study will answer four research questions related to households' livelihoods of losing agricultural land for urbanization purposes according to three types of urban areas in Vietnam. These questions include (1) comparing the implementation of land acquisition and compensation policies in the three localities; (2) labour status and income of households after land acquisition; (3) how the compensation money is used by the households and (4) the households who lost their land enjoyed life before or after land acquisition. In order to answer these research questions, 370 questionnaires and 30 interviews were conducted in the peri-urban zones of three metropolitan regions, Hanoi, Danang, and Vinh. According to our research results, the larger the city is, the lower the implementation degree of land acquisition and compensation policy is. Compared with household employment, these indicators showed a contrast to policy implementation. However, the income of surveyed households did not show clearly patterns because it depends on many other factors, as well. The only similarity that can be made is how compensation money is used after land recovery when households mainly spend for non-profit purposes. The factors mentioned above also affect the choice of favorite life of households in our three study sites.
